There was more to Day Nine of the IAAF World Athletic Championships than Mo Farah and Usain Bolt. More medals were up for grabs, more Brits were flying the flag and the beginning of the end for London Stadium’s summer of athletics moved a step closer.
Britain’s medal drought was ended as the 4x100m relay women followed on from Farah and won a brilliant silver. Darryl Neita anchored home the quartet to edge Jamaica whilst 100m champion Tori Bowie led USA to yet another gold medal.
Two relays, two medals and a remarkable night for British athletics as another Saturday at London Stadium leaves its place in history.
Katarina Johnson-Thompson aimed on redeeming her Heptathlon with a High Jump medal, yet it was not to be. A season’s best of 1.97m only got her sixth with team-mate Morgan Lake in seventh. Maria Lasitskene rounded off a great year with gold.
Sally Pearson’s fairy-tale return was complete with gold in the 100m hurdles. Olympic champion back in Beijing nine years ago, she fended off American Dawn Harper-Nelson and Pamela Dutkiewicz.
The Decathlon was won by Frenchman Kevin Mayer. Silver medallist in Rio last year, he overcame the German pair Rico Freimuth and Kai Kazmirek.
However, Germany did win gold in the men’s Javelin. Johannes Vetter out-threw the Czech pair of Jakub Vadlejch and Petr Frydrych.
