In Review: Day Three Evening Session

By Sam Tonks

The evening of Day Three of the IAAF World Athletic Champions brought opportunities for Team GB athletes to shine. Out to give the home crowd something to cheer for, one stood out from the rest.

Kyle Langford only made it into the 800m semi-finals as a fastest loser, but in an outstanding finish, automatically goes into the final tomorrow night.

“I was feeling shattered, but I felt good in the last 100 metres and now I’m in the final,” said Langford.

“It was my goal to get to the final, let’s see what I can pop out tomorrow.”

Elliot Giles and Guy Learmouth aimed for a spot in the 800m final but were left behind in a top-class field featuring World champion silver medallist Adam Kszcot and 2012 silver medallist Nijel Amos.

Katarina Johnson-Thompson couldn’t turn it around in the 800m despite a second- place finish in front of an electric home crowd. Johnson-Thompson ended the Heptathlon in fifth place.

“I wanted it to come together but I’ve got a lot to work on for the future,” she said.

Holly Bradshaw has fond memories of London 2012, despite finishing sixth in the Pole Vault final, she got engaged. This time, she was hoping her field result would improve, yet it ended up being sixth again.

Elsewhere, Jamaica’s sprint hoodoo continued in London with Elaine Thompson only fifth in the 100m final. USA’s Torie Bowie spectacularly fell over the line to beat Ivory Coast’s Marie Jose Ta Lou. Former World champion Dafne Schippers claimed bronze.
