As we work through West Ham’s first season here at London Stadium, attention now turns to October. August saw European giants open the Stadium, and September wasn’t short of goals at the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park venue, but October took a different turn again.
On the first day of the month, West Ham drew 1-1 with Middlesborough, who were ultimately relegated at the end of the season.
Dimitri Payet scored one of the Premier League goals of the season to equalise in the match, beating four defenders before firing home from a narrow angle.
The goal brought the sides level after Cristhian Stuani’s opener for the visitors, shortly after Mark Noble hit the bar for the Hammers.
Winston Reid was the man who turned one point into three in the Hammers’ next outing at London Stadium. After being denied a first half penalty after being hauled down in the area by Javier Manquillo, Reid fired home in the 94th minute to secure a narrow win.
Just four days later and West Ham made quite the statement in the EFL cup. Last time out in the cup at London Stadium, the Hammers won 1-0 against Accrington Stanley. This time, Chelsea.
Cheikhou Kouyate and Edimilson Fernandes gave the Hammers an unassailable two goal lead, and it took until injury time for Gary Cahill to finally bundle home to reduce the deficit.
