MATCH REPORT // HAMMERS HOLD MANCHESTER UNITED TO GOALLESS STALEMATE

By Daniel Mcinally

West Ham United took a share of the spoils as they drew 0-0 with Manchester United at London Stadium tonight.

David Moyes’ men proved more than a match for the second-best team in England and will hope this result can stand them in good stead for the final game of the season against Everton on Sunday.

Chances were at a premium during the first half, as both teams struggled to create openings. Luke Shaw came closest for the visitors when his effort hit being pushed onto the post by Adrian.

The loudest cheer from the home fans came when Arnautovic touched the ball, the Austrian attacker looked to cause danger whenever he got the ball, his direct running was a causing Chris Smalling huge problems, seemingly at will.

On the 26th minute Arnautovic received the ball from Joao Mario, completed a step over and ran past Smalling crossing the ball into the box, and had it not been for a Lindelöf block, it surely would have been 1-0 to the home side.

It was a similar pattern in the second half, Manchester United took control of possession, but West Ham would break with pace and precision.

Arnautovic continued to be the thorn in the side, causing problems for Chris Smalling and Phil Jones whenever he got the ball.

On the hour mark, he was able to receive the ball and run into the area, Jones went to ground and was extraordinarily lucky not to touch Arnautovic’s ankle and give away a penalty.

Cresswell’s free kick on the 90th minute could have won it for Moyes’ men but his effort went wide over De Gea’s goal.

The Hammers will look to the final game of the season against Everton on Sunday at London Stadium, and will hope to end the season on a high.
