The Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees will face off at London Stadium next June. But across the Atlantic, they met at Fenway Park with the Yankees looking to salvage a post-season wild-card game.
With the Red Sox securing their place in the American Division Series in record-breaking style, in this meeting the Yankees capitalised to secure a resounding 11-6 win.Â
Aaron Judge hit the Yankees’ fourth home-run of the game, his 27th for the season, equalling the 1997 Seattle Mariners record of 264 home-runs in a season. It’s not just the Red Sox making records in Major League Baseball.Â
Aaron Hicks, Gary Sanchez and Luke Voit also struck homers in the victory. If the Yankees can break the record in the final two games of the regular season, expect to see Judge’s ball in the Hall of Fame museum soon.
They raced into an 8-0 lead by the sixth innings but Steve Pearce grand-slam halved the deficit, giving the Red Sox hope. However, the visitors had enough to claim a vital win, meaning they have home-advantage for the play-off game with Oakland Athletics on Wednesday.
Manager Aaron Boone backs his side to get the job done in front of home support, which would set-up a best of five-game American Division Series with, Red Sox, the first since 2004.
Racking up eight wins in 11 games, Yankees have momentum going into post-season and the confidence of facing Athletics at home. Recording six wins out of six in last year’s post-season, Boone’s side will fancy a Red Sox reunion to be sealed this week.
